ABOUT ABOUT

Extraordinary Los Angeles based bassist/vocalist multitalent and stewardess of the hard-swingin' mainstream jazz tradition brings all-star quartet to BLU for masterclass (6PM, FREE) and concert (8PM)! Featuring Ken Peplowski, Justin Kauflin, Matt Witek. Presented by the BLU Jazz+ Masterclass Foundation.

A triple threat talent, Katie Thiroux has garnered considerable attention for her bravura bass playing, assured singing and compelling compositions. With the release of her debut album, “Introducing Katie Thiroux,” her substantial gifts as a bandleader and recording artist are now also on view.

Lending contemporary flair to mainstream stylings, Thiroux carries on the hard swinging tradition of such bass masters as Ray Brown and John Clayton, while channeling the buoyant vocal finesse of iconic singers including Anita O’Day, Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald. Joined by her bandmates on “Introducing Katie Thiroux,” the guitarist Graham Dechter (Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Michael Bublé), the saxophonist Roger Neumann (Anita O’Day, Woody Herman) and the drummer Matt Witek (John Pizzarelli Quartet), Thiroux offers in-the-moment jazz that draws upon the rich history of the music, from swing to bebop and beyond.

In addition to work with her quartet, Thiroux has been heard with, among others, pianists Larry Fuller and Geri Allen, saxophonists Ken Peplowski and Harry Allen, trumpeters Terrell Stafford and Brian Lynch and drummers Lewis Nash and Jeff Hamilton. She has also performed at jazz festivals in the United States, Mexico, Germany, Finland, Serbia and Singapore.

Having studied both bass and voice since her pre-teenage years (including vocal studies with Tierney Sutton), Thiroux was already gigging and garnering accolades — including the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s “Shelly Manne New Talent Award ” – while still in high school. In her senior year, Katie was awarded the Phil Ramone Presidential Scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. There she performed with Branford Marsalis, Greg Osby, Dr. Billy Taylor, Terri Lyne Carrington and others, while also working regularly at Boston’s Regatta Bar and The Kitano in New York City.
